What's special about a Bag Lunch Briefings?

Our new Bag Lunch Briefing (BLB) series aims to provide useful information and discussion on corporate social responsibility (CSR) topics of interest to you. The casual format includes brief presentations (10 minutes each), followed by discussion. Each BLB will feature 1-2 speakers, and we'll invite other "guest experts" to contribute to the discussion. This month's briefing: World AIDS Day

December 1st is World AIDS Day, so our December Briefing will look at the HIV/AIDS situation in Hong Kong and China, as well as what companies can do about it. Programs related to HIV/AIDS and other health threats can bring benefits to employees, the community, and companies, so we'll discuss why companies should care and how they can take action that brings mutual benefits.

SPEAKERS

* Mr. Andrew Bester, Managing Director and Regional Head of Wholesale Banking Client Relationships Greater China and Japan with Standard Chartered Bank, will share a case study of SCB's programs in Hong Kong and Greater China. Mr. Bester's prime responsibility is the management and strategic direction of the corporate and institutional client franchise in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan. He is a member of the Regional Executive Committee for Greater China, the Bank’s Business Leadership Team and the Wholesale Banking Leadership Team. He also serves on the boards of the Standard Chartered Bank (China) Limited and Standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan) Limited. Andrew is an active participant in corporate and social responsibility initiatives. He is the Regional Ambassador of the Bank’s ‘Living with AIDS/HIV’ staff and community education programme and is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation. Andrew is also a Member of the Business Policy Unit of The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

* Mr. Chung To, Founder and Chairperson, Chi Heng Foundation, will share some background on the HIV/AIDS situation in Hong Kong and China, as well as his thoughts on what companies can do. The Chi Heng Foundation, which has been actively working on AIDS prevention and care in China. Mr To resided in the United States for 13 years, where he received a Bachelor Degree at Columbia University and a Master Degree at Harvard University. After graduation, he had worked with a number of major investment banks in New York and Hong Kong. While he was in Hong Kong, he founded Chi Heng and began volunteer services on AIDS projects in mainland China. In 2002, he decided to turn his full attention to his work with Chi Heng. Mr To has been a member of the AIDS Prevention and Care Committee appointed by the HKSAR Government since 1999, and became the Chairperson of AIDS Concern in 2003. This year, he was selected as one of Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World. He was also a recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award in 2003, and was featured as Ten Anti-AIDS Heroes in China in 2004 and Ten Future Leaders of China in 2005 by People's Weekly Magazine.

Alex Lei In 1984, DBEDT established the State of Hawaii Taipei Office and in 2001, launched the Beijing office. DBEDT's Taipei and Beijing offices offer a wide range of services for residents of Hawaii. We are fortunate to have as our guest speaker, Mr. Fong Ngai, Assistant Commissioner of the Labor Department (Policy Support and Strategic Planning). Mr. Fong, a senior official with the Labour Department, has agreed to open the meeting with a briefing on the Hong Kong Government's voluntary Wage Protection Movement for about half an hour including Q&A. This is likely to be of interest to members of the Law and Trade & Investment committees as well as we weigh development of a white paper or position paper on the issue.

He has taught you the joy of giving services as was so vividly expressed at my testimonial dinner which you prepared to perfection.

Jim Clifton contends, “Lousy companies sell 100% on price. Great companies pursue a strategy of organic growth. The key to that strategy is how organizations perform one customer at a time. So here’s the million-dollar question for executives: is your company a partner with every customer, or just a vendor? Consider your answer carefully, because it will determine your stock price.”

Whether your company has 100 customers or several million, organic growth occurs when you increase the amount of sales with your current customer base. The key to this is building “advice” relationships instead of “price” relationships. The difference between getting a lousy return or a great return from an individual customer doesn’t lie with a company’s merchandising, its ad agency, or its Six Sigma restocking or shipping techniques; it lies with the sales associate who senses an unmet emotional need and fulfills it. Within this concept of the “Emotional Economy” lies the potential economic impact of millions of missed transactions — or millions of transactions fulfilled — every day.

According to Clifton , organic growth occurs when an organization creates more transactions with its current customer base and with continuously growing margins. Clifton notes that advice-versus-price relationships are present in all businesses, organizations, and professions. Regardless of industry, however, an organic growth strategy demands extraordinary creativity and imagination from the people who interact with customers.

How large is this “advice relationship” opportunity? Well, the Emotional Economy that lies within customer interactions is bigger than what W. Edwards Deming found when he first started looking at defects and variation 60 years ago. Deming discovered that 50% of all U.S. manufacturing costs came from redoing product. The range Gallup finds in customer service performance is as large as or larger than the defect ranges Deming found in “lousy-to-great” manufacturing.

So how can companies institutionalize organic growth? How do leaders get a large organization deeply focused on a very different customer service strategy, one based more on advice than price? Jim Clifton will address these and other related questions and issues during this limited invitation-only CEO Roundtable Breakfast.

Trip to Shenzhen - Program

Mainland China’s demand for technology and as a source of technology is expected to increase due to growth in manufacturing, merchandise imports/ exports as well as the development of hi-tech industries in the country. A growing awareness of the environment and sustainable developments has also fueled demand. Hong Kong is expected to play a pivotal role as a platform for two-way flow of technology.

Why Pearl River Delta – Shenzhen?

Given Hong Kong’s close economic relationship with Shenzhen and the proximity of the two cities, Shenzhen is naturally regarded as the first choice in developing a strategic alliance with Hong Kong in technology co-operation. Through the joint efforts of the two cities, a number of promotional initiatives have been embarked, including cross-boundary joint research, enhanced participation in each other’s flagship technology event, building of technology database and overseas marketing.

In realizing this huge partnership potential, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Shenzhen Municipal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on High-tech Alliance in June 2006.

The Shenzhen Bay Bridge (also known as the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor) is the fourth vehicular boundary crossing between the Hong Kong and Shenzhen to relief traffic congestion of the three existing crossings at Lok Ma Chau, Sha Tau Kok and Man Kam To. Officially opened on 1 July 2007, this is the first boundary control point with the immigration and custom checkpoint of both Hong Kong & Chinese mainland co-located. It is expected that the immigration and custom clearance procedure will be simplified and it will greatly facilitate the cargo and passenger flows across the border.

Objective: To get an overview of role of SHIP in the high-tech industry in Shenzhen and its collaboration with Hong Kong.

Profile: As one of the five state-level high-tech parks supported by the Chinese central government, the Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Park (SHIP) was established in September 1996. The park covers an area of 11.5 km2. In 2003, the total industrial output value of SHIP was RMB89.5 billion, among which the hi-tech output accounted for RMB86.7 billion. SHIP produced 18% of the total industrial output of Shenzhen with an export value of USD5.2 billion. Tenants like Kingdee, Tencent and Techwayson are listed in Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Objective: To understand the latest development of Hong Kong’s creative and content industry, as well as the operation of a leading content business in Shenzhen.

Profile: Headquartered in Hong Kong, GDC is one of the leading groups in the digital content business which encompasses computer graphics ("CG") creation, production, distribution and exhibitions of digital content, plus training of CG artists in the Asia Pacific region.

GDC has built a production pipeline in the city of Shenzhen for the production of CG content for animated films, TV series and other CG applications. The market capitalisation of SSE is around RMB 1 trillion (US$ 122 billion). On a daily basis, around 600,000 deals, valued at US$ 807 million are being traded on the SSE. Filmed on location in the provinces of Hubei, Si chuan, and Shandong, and in Shanghai and Beijing, “Living Chinese Philosophy” stresses the relevance of an understanding of Confucianism and Daoism in assaying China’s responses to the pressing issues of modernization. Th e guiding premise of this documentary is that these ancient philosophies are very much alive and well in the ways of thinking and living of the Chinese people.

UHM professor Roger T. Ames with a lifetime interest in Chinese philosophy takes us into these traditions, providing a vocabulary for understanding Confucianism and Daoism. The film looks at the pervasive in? uence of these ideas on the ordinary life of the people in the preparation of food for the dinner table, in
the important role of music and musical performance, and in the practices of traditional Chinese medicine.

The film uses culture to interpret several of China’s responses to the most pressing problems of the day: the impact of economic development, the degradation of the environment, the ongoing process of democratization, and human rights issues.

Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Summit on Saturday, September 22nd in Honolulu Hawaii

What do the people of Hawai'i want for the future of our economy? Our society? Our environment and natural resources? How do we implement true change to move Hawai'i toward a more sustainable future?

We will present the community's answers to these questions in five weeks at the Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Summit, when the draft Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Plan is unveiled. The draft sustainability plan is the result of 18 months of listening to and analyzing the ideas, opinions and goals of our communities for the years to come.

Accountability and the ability to implement action are two ideas the community has demanded in planning for the future. So as part of the draft Hawai'i 2050 Sustainability Plan, we will propose a citizen-driven Sustainability Council designed to achieve outcomes and publicly report on the state's sustainability progress. The U.S.-China relationship has become one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world, but what do the American and Chinese actually think about each other? How do American business leaders and congressional staffers perceive China? At the above roundtable luncheon, General John L. Fugh, Chairman of Committee of 100, will share results from surveys commissioned by his organisation.

The Committee of 100 was founded in 1990 by a group of concerned Chinese Americans, including I.M. Pei and Yo-Yo Ma, who are leaders in their fields. They recognized the need for an organization that brings a Chinese American perspective to U.S.-Greater China relations and that addresses the concerns of Americans of Chinese heritage.

The key functions of the Committee are to serve as a bridge between Greater China and America and to provide a forum for those issues that Americans of Chinese and Asian descent face in the United States. The Committee is dedicated to serving as a "cultural ambassador" to foster the exchange of ideas and perspectives among our members with those in the community and government.

General Fugh, the first Chinese-American to attain general officer status in the U.S. Army, is the Chairman of the Committee of 100. He was born in Beijing, China, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. At age 15, he relocated to the U.S. with his parents. He was The Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army, retiring from that position in 1993, after 33 years of service.

After retirement from the Army, General Fugh joined as a partner at the law firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Booth in Washington, D.C. Later, for five years, he served as Chief Representative for several U.S. companies in Beijing, including McDonnell Douglas, which later merged with Boeing Company. Special Guest Speaker, Randall Peerenboom
Author of “China Modernizes: Threat to the West or Model for the Rest?”

Two sharply contrasting views of China exist today -- on the one hand a rising superpower predicted to have the largest economy in the world by mid century, on the other a brutal, authoritarian regime that is a threat to the geo-stability of the industrial world. So which is the real China? Randall Peerenboom addresses this question by exploring China's economy, political and legal systems, and most controversially, its record on civil, political and personal rights in the context of the developing world. He highlights the often hypocritical stance of an international community which demands standards from others that it does not match at home. He also critically evaluates the benefits of globalization and democratization and the normative values of the West set against Beijing's determination to retain its cultural and political integrity.

Randall Peerenboom is based in Beijing. He is the Director of the China Rule of Law Program for the Oxford Foundation for Law, Justice and Society; Associate Research Fellow at the Center for Socio-Legal Studies Oxford University; and Professor of Law at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He obtained a BA in Philosophy from the U-Wisconsin Madison, an MA in Chinese Religion and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Hawaii, before obtaining a JD from Columbia Law School. In addition to serving as an expert witness on PRC legal issues, he has been a consultant to the Ford Foundation and the Asian Development Bank on legal reforms and rule of law in China.

Asian Aerospace Hong Kong 2007 AES On September 2-4, 2007

The U.S. Commercial Service Aerospace & Defense Technology Team and the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong will offer the AEROSPACE EXECUTIVE SERVICE, a unique way for U.S. firms to participate in the 2007 Asian Aerospace International Expo & Congress.

Asian Aerospace 2007, a certified U.S. Department of Commerce trade show, will take place at Hong Kong's new AsiaWorld Expo complex, adjacent to Hong Kong International Airport.

2007 marks the first time Asian Aerospace has been held in Hong Kong. The region's premier aerospace event for 25 years, Asian Aerospace was last organized in Singapore in February 2006. With the relocation to Hong Kong comes a renewed emphasis on the Asia Pacific's fast-moving commercial aviation market; the 2007 Congress focuses on air tranport strategies, operations and technologies.

In 2006, Asian Aerospace recorded deals in excess of US$15 billion. The cumulative order book, mainly in the commercial sector, included an array of some 40 agreements ranging from major fixed and rotary wing aircraft and engine purchases, sales of aircraft simulators, and avionics packages, MRO, aerospace supply chain management and consultancy contracts. Asian Aerospace 2006 attracted 940 exhibitors from 43 countries and 153 delegations from 44 countries, including first-time major participation by Chinese visitors.

According to Boeing, by 2012 "Asia's share of the world's commercial airplane fleet will become equal to Europe's share at 24%... by 2026, Asia-Pacific's share will reach 29%, surpassing that of Europe." Participation in Asian Aerospace presents an excellent opportunity to develop and nurture the relationships required to tap into the region's huge demand for air transportation.

Senior Policy Seminar Luncheon 2007 - “Critical Issues for U.S. Policy in the Asia Pacific Region”

Four leading experts from the policy and academic worlds will comment on the critical issues discussed at the East-West Center's eighth Senior Policy Seminar. The Seminar addressed geopolitics, economics, and the role of "soft power," focusing on implications for the United States' policy. This year's panelists are:

Ambassador Han Sung-Joo, President of Korea University and the SeoulForum for International Affairs. Formerly served as the Republic of Korea's Ambassador to the U.S., the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Chairman of The East Asia Vision Group.

"U.S.-China Relations: The Outlook for Business" - John Frisbie, President, The US-China Business Council

The US-China Business Council President John Frisbie will present his and USCBC views on developments in Washington, ongoing bilateral initiatives including the important Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Joint Commission on Commerce & Trade, and ongoing U.S.-China business issues as experienced in the work of USCBC's Washington, Beijing and Shanghai offices. Hawai‘i Tourism Authority's COUNTY PRODUCT ENRICHMENT PROGRAM SEEKS TO SUPPORT EVENTS AND PROGRAMS ON ALL COUNTIES

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), the state agency for tourism, in partnership with the City & County of Honolulu and the Counties of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i and Maui, are soliciting proposals for tourism product enrichment projects in 2008 under the HTA’s County Product Enrichment Program (CPEP). The intent of CPEP is to support community-based events and activities on each county that help to strengthen and diversify Hawai‘i’s tourism offerings related to the niches of agriculture, culture, education, nature, health & wellness and technology.

“The CPEP program has been successful in providing visitors with venues to experience the diversity, culture and values that make Hawai‘i so unique,” said Rex Johnson, president and chief executive officer of HTA. “This program is an excellent example of a successful community-public partnership that provides visitors the opportunity to interact with residents while providing residents with events and projects that support and perpetuate our local culture.”

Last year, over 100 projects throughout the state were supported through CPEP including O‘ahu’s Lei Day Celebration and 25th Okinawan Festival; Hawai‘i Island’s Kona Earth Festival, Queen Lili‘uokalani Festival and Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival; Kaua‘i’s Banana Poka Round Up and Mokihana Festival; and Maui’s 15th East Maui Taro Festival, Lāna‘i Pineapple Festival and Moloka‘i Ka Hula Piko.

Beginning July 16, application packets will be available for download on each of the county’s Web sites (see below) or at HTA’s Web Site at www.hawaiitourismauthority.org. Proposals must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. (HST) on August 31, 2007.

To assist with the application process, HTA and the counties will be holding free workshops to provide detailed information on CPEP including proposal solicitation and the award process. Information on the workshops is provided below:

Given the dynamic growth of China and its people's ability to now explore destinations beyond their borders, it holds the potential to offer not only a brand new market for visitors, but also for potential investors. Christopher McNally's observations of the potential China holds as a market for Hawaii is not only timely but fascinating.

Dr. Christopher A. McNally is a Research Fellow in Politics, Governance and Security Studies. As a political economist, his research focus on contemporary varieties of capitalism, including the nature and logic of China's capitalist transition.

He is now studying the implication of China's capitalist renaissance on the global order. Dr. McNally has held fellowship conducting fieldwork and research at the Asia Research Centre in West Australia, the Institute of Asia Pacific Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences,

He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington in Seattle and has authored numerous publications, including most recently in The China Quarterly, Asian Perspective and Comparative Social Research. Confucius Institutes expanding worldwide - By Zhu Zhe (China Daily)

Confucius, who revolutionized education in China 2,500 years ago by making it accessible to commoners, once pondered taking a boat to spread wisdom everywhere. Today, he would have received offers of air tickets from dozens of countries to meet students in schools named after him. There will soon be 80 Confucius Institutes worldwide, according to agreements signed on Wednesday by Chinese Language Council International (CLCI), a government body which co-ordinates language-teaching efforts in other countries. Portugal, Belarus and Serbia will have their first institutes; and one each in Britain, Germany and Spain will bring the three countries' total to 14. The United States and Thailand have the highest number of institutes 11 each.

Figures from the Ministry of Education show that more than 30 million people are learning Chinese worldwide, and the number is on the rise, creating an acute demand for teachers. The rapidly-growing number of Confucius Institutes is to meet the "huge demand for Chinese learning overseas", State Councillor Chen Zhili said yesterday in Beijing on the first day of a two-day Confucius Institute Conference. The institutes' main responsibilities are to teach Chinese, train teachers, certify instructors, conduct examinations and provide consultancy services on Chinese culture, the economy and society.

"Chinese has become hot in the United States during the past one or two years," said Nancy Jervis, vice-president of the New York-based China Institute, who is in Beijing to attend the conference. Her organization hosts the earliest Confucius Institute in the United States. She said some parents, brokers on Wall Street, have gone to the extent of employing Chinese nannies for their children so that they grow up speaking Chinese and work internationally. "China's rapid economic growth is the major reason behind the language fever," she said, adding that the unique culture is also a big attraction.

The China Institute is also working with New York city and state officials to teach Chinese in public schools more than 2,400 US secondary schools have expressed interest but Jervis worries there would not be enough teachers. "Currently, there are about 500 Chinese teachers in the United States, but we need at least 5,000," she said. In response to some US media reports that the institutes are being set up to export "soft power," Jervis said it is common practice for countries to set up such institutes to let other people understand their culture better. She pointed out as examples the Alliance Francaise and Goethe Institutes around the world.

Globalization and Leadership: Developing a 'Dream Team' to Deliver on China's Promise - Gary Burnison, CEO, Korn/Ferry International

As China's prominence as an economic powerhouse has risen, so have the expectations of foreign investors and multinational companies seeking to take advantage of the tremendous growth opportunities available there. Margaret Fong was born and educated in Hong Kong . Upon graduation, she joined the Hong Kong civil service as an Administrative Officer. She served as the Assistant Private Secretary to the former Governor, Lord David Wilson, before joining the Finance Branch to look after the funding of Hong Kong Government’s public works programme. From 1993 to 1997, she served in the Constitutional Affairs Branch and was heavily involved in a full range of transition-related issues, including the setting up of the office of the Chief Executive (Designate). Miss Fong served as Deputy Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Washington, D.C. from 1997 to 1999 in charge of export control, intellectual property rights issues and congressional relations. She returned to Hong Kong in late 1999 and joined the Transport Branch as Deputy Secretary. As Deputy Secretary for Transport, Miss Fong’s portfolio covered a wide range of subjects from road safety and traffic management issues to planning for new road and rail networks both within Hong Kong and linking with the Pearl River Delta. In August 2004, Miss Fong returned to Washington , D.C. to take up the post of Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. As Director-General, Miss Fong was responsible for US-Hong Kong bilateral trade relations, relations with the U.S. Federal Administration, U.S. Congress, prominent think-tanks and the U.S. business community. On July 31, 2006, Miss Fong assumed the post of Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA , the most senior representative of Hong Kong in America . As Commissioner, she directs the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s effort in promoting U.S.-Hong Kong economic and trade relationship, and constituency-building activities in the U.S. Miss Fong also oversees the work of the three Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices in Washington , New York and San Francisco.

With low costs and a relative ease of recruiting patients, China has surpassed India and Russia as the top overseas choice for clinical trials among major drug companies. While this is a growth industry, there are ethical issues involved for many foreign pharmaceutical companies. Will recent changes in policy be effective and bring in more foreign investment?

Dr. Wan has significant corporate experience in building and managing companies in both the biotech and diagnostic industries. She was most recently the founder, President, CEO and Board Member of GeneTrol Biotherapeutics (1997?2002), a venture-backed biopharmaceutical company. She previously held executive positions as President of the Cellular Imaging Systems Division of Becton Dickinson (1991?1996) and founding Board Member of Guava Technologies, Inc (1997?2001) and was the first executive of Systemix (1988?1990). Previously she held management positions at several firms, including Hana Biologics and Baxter Travenol. Winnie received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Yale University, an MBA from Columbia University and a BA from Skidmore College.

Dr. Regis Kelly | Executive Director, QB3.
Dr. Kelly is both the leader of QB3, a consortium of over 100 life science researchers working at three northern University of California campuses (Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco) who are quantitative biologists working at the interface of the physical and biological sciences, as well as a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF. His research has focused on the molecular mechanisms of peptide hormone and neurotransmitter release in endocrine cells and at synapses. From 2000 to 2004, Regis served as Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California in San Francisco, where his major responsibility was the new Mission Bay campus. From 1995 to 2000, he served as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF, as the Director of the Hormone Research Institute at UCSF,from 1992 to 2000, and earlier as the Director of UCSF's Cell Biology Graduate Program. A member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Society for Biochemistry and American Society for Cell Biology, Dr. Kelly received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and his Ph.D. in Biophysics from the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Chen Yu | Partner, Vivo Ventures
Dr. Yu is an MD, MBA graduate of Stanford University. Dr. Yu has extensive operating experience in a broad array of industries with stints at a Quantive, Eli Lilly, and Bain & Co. In particular, Dr. Yu?s experience as an early employee at aQuantive, recently acquired by Microsoft for $6B in a transaction that represents the largest acquisition in Microsoft history, has provided him with special expertise in building new companies. During his tenure there as a Group Product Manager, he led the team that designed, developed, and launched the company?s first suite of ad targeting software. Dr. Yu is the owner of multiple patents pending in technology and the life sciences. Dr. Yu has also published several research articles in the fields of infectious disease and immunology in journals such as the Journal of Experimental Medicine. He currently serves on the boards of several private life science companies. Dr. Yu graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Biology from Harvard University.

Dr. Shuster received his undergraduate education at Brandeis University, graduating with a B.A. in Biophysics. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University's Department of Physiology and Molecular Biophysics. While at Columbia he worked with Professor Eric Kandel as part of a team focused on discovery of mechanisms by which short term memories are stored, work for which Professor Kandel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2000. Dr. Shuster pursued his interests in ion channel biophysics and protein structure, first as a Markey post-doctoral fellow at UCSF's Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, and then as a research biochemist studying neuronal mechanisms of pain transduction in UCSF's Department of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Shuster is a co-instructor of "A Life Scientist's Guide to Intellectual Property" at UCSF, and regularly lectures about intellectual property law subjects . He is past chair of the Intellectual Property section of the Barrister's Club of San Francisco. Dr. Shuster has published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals as well as articles on biotechnology patent law. Representative technologies for which he's written and prosecuted patent applications include genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, vaccines, microfluidic devices, drug delivery methods and microarrays.

The Spirit of China showcases artistic diversity ranging from the ephemeral to the earthly, from the classics to the modern, on the stage at Hawai’i Theatre. Wah-Hui Chu, the Non-Executive Chairman of PepsiCo International 's Asia Region will explain how the brand moved from near-irrelevance 10 years ago to become China's number one soft drink brand in 2005 and the market leader today. During Mr. Chu's nine years as president of PepsiCo International - China Beverages Business Unit, PepsiCo's beverages business in China quadrupled in sales volume and doubled its market share while achieving new record high market share every year from 1998 to 2006.

Dr. Willy Wo-Lap Lam, Political Analyst and Journalist

"China Under Hu Jintao: Prospects for Political and Legal Reform and the Outlook for Business"

Dr. Lam is a noted authority on China with more than 30 years' experience writing and researching about China and connections that reflect that. His views on China are often sought by global media, including CNN, BBC, ABC, Bloomberg, Voice of America, and other major publications and electronic media. He has worked in senior editorial positions in international media including Asiaweek newsmagazine, the South China Morning Post, and the Asia-Pacific headquarters of CNN.

State Policy Network Pacific Rim Conference and GRIH "East Meets West" Conference May 23-25, 2007

On May 25, in conjunction with the State Policy Network's Pacific Rim Conference, GRIH will host a special "East Meets West" conference at the East-West Center on the University of Hawaii campus. This one-day conference will provide basic information and networking infrastructure to help promote and develop commercial exchange, trade and mutual prosperity between the USA and the Pacific Rim. Hawaii will be highlighted as a key asset to making it all happen.

Below you will find more information about the purpose and concept behind this groundbreaking conference.

Background: The State Policy Network is an umbrella organization which includes about 100 free market public policy/education and related institutions from across the USA. Most are state or regionally focused (Show-Me Institute in Missouri), some are national (Heritage Foundation, Reason Foundation). All are active, influential participants in public policy development debate and dialog, always with emphasis on individual freedom to chose and the free market. This meeting is their regular western conference, with the venue helping to give Hawaii (GRIH) a boost.

At our request, they have included for the first time a Pacific Rim focus. They call it Pacific Rim Policy Conference. That gives us in Hawaii a unique opportunity to showcase Hawaii as a bridge between the mainland USA and the think tanks and nations of the Pacific Rim.

Consequently, all day Friday the 25th will be targeted toward the assets available in Hawaii for expertise, education, communication, co-ordination and appropriate connections to the mainland USA and vice versa. Also addressed will be impediments to the attainment of prosperity and the policies required to open the door to overall productivity throughout the Pacific Rim.

Purpose: Provide basic information and networking infrastructure to promote, develop and grow better commercial exchange trade and mutual prosperity between the USA and the Pacific Rim with Hawaii highlighted as a helpful, activating, enhancing and sustaining bridge to help it happen.

Specifically: Attending Pacific Rim think tanks are influential generators and movers of public policy in their respective nations. They will leave the conference with innovative ideas and programs which have worked or are working elsewhere. Perhaps more important, they will have entry to networks of problem solvers and effectiveness builders - both private and public, both commercial and non-profit.

Participating commercial individuals and organizations will have a venue to showcase their abilities and capabilities, with a personal connection to boot.

All attending U.S. think tanks are non-profit organizations focused on assisting in the philosophy of enhancing individual human freedom and potential productivity no matter where in the world that might be. They are mission-oriented. Thus, they will be actively seeking and finding ways to help move liberty forward, no matter where. This is a potential asset that may be poorly understood by many commercial attendees going into the conference.

Specific Interactions in Hawaii:

International Law. Legal expertise on commerce and trade is essential to success. Hawaii’s assets are abundant to include the sources for tapping of relevant expertise elsewhere.

Higher Education. University of Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific University, JAIMS and other organizations are oriented to the Pacific Rim and provide a multitude of programs and activities related to commercial and intellectual interaction. The East-West Center and the University of Hawaii are critically important elements in fostering interaction.

Capital Contacts. Hawaii possesses a rapidly developing investment and banking infrastructure already focused on the Pacific Rim. Included is a rapidly developing angel investment network.

Hawaii’s Cosmopolitan Society. Our multi-ethnic Aloha for all society provides an excellent language and cultural bridge for interaction. Additionally, our ethnic/national Chambers of Commerce and Consulates (Hong Kong, Philippine, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.) provide basis for enhanced interchanges. The fact that more Chambers and Consulates in Hawaii would be welcomed, will be highlighted.

Communications. Hawaii possesses an excellent infrastructure and multi-language capability. In addition, our time zone makes for an excellent bridge between the Pacific Rim and the mainland USA.

Business Climate Perception. The well-known vacation potential of Hawaii tends to spill over negatively with regard to business, because of people thinking we are oriented only to play. It is hoped that this image will be altered somewhat by this conference.

Tourism Expertise in Hawaii is deeply ingrained. From operations to design, Hawaii excels.

Dr. David K.P. Li is Chairman and Chief Executive of The Bank of East Asia, Ltd. He is a non-official member of the Executive Council and has represented the finance constituency in Hong Kong's Legislative Council for over 20 years.

Dr. Li plays an active role in the development of Hong Kong's financial infrastructure as a member of the Banking Advisory Committee and the Hong Kong Association of Banks Committee. He served as convenor of the Focus Group on Financial Services under the Government's Economic Summit on China's 11th Five Year Plan and the Development of Hong Kong, which recommends that Hong Kong should cooperate with the Mainland in order to develop Hong Kong into an international financial center of global significance.

Dr. Li will offer his views on why China needs Hong Kong as its international financial center. He will discuss why it is so important to raise Hong Kong's standing to the level of a New York or London, and how and why Hong Kong should aim to fulfill the role of China's financial center.

Dr. Li serves on the board of directors of a number of prominent public companies, both in Hong Kong and abroad. He is a strong supporter of educational causes and is chairman of the Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command Advisory Board, and the St. James Settlement. Dr. Li attended the University of Cambridge, and has a MA in Economics and Law.

The University of Hawa‘i at Mānoa is proud to present Master Wang Chang Yuan in a guzheng recital. Master Wang is one of the most representative performers of the guzheng in contemporary China. A former soloist of the famous Shanghai National Orchestra, Master Wang has performed recitals and concerts the US, Asia, and Europe. Her virtuosity, musicality and command of the instrument have made her one of the most influential players in recent history of traditional Chinese music. It is our honor to invite Master Wang to Honolulu to share her artistry with us.

The University of Hawai‘i Chinese Music Program and the Yellow Emperor Ensemble have individually been promoting Chinese music in Honolulu, and. this is our first collaboration. The UHM Chinese Music program was started by Professor Frederick Lau at UH Mānoa, who is a music scholar and performer of Chinese Music. Under his direction, the program has maintained an active ensemble and is producing scholars of Chinese music. The Yellow Emperor Ensemble was established in 2005, and its goal is to promote Chinese music. It has performed in numerous social events in the local Chinese community. All of the members are trained musicians and a few were professional musicians prior to emigrating to the US. Their efforts to perpetuate Chinese music and culture in the Honolulu Chinese community are commendable.

Maneuvers in a Minefield: Confronting Corruption and Kickbacks in China

Foreign invested companies and branches in China have recently been shown to be vulnerable to investigation by PRC enforcement agencies over illegal actions of employees. Such investigations can harm business operations, staff morale and a company's public image, and may interest US regulators. The program will address the challenges to American companies seeking to comply with Chinese laws against commercial bribery and official corruption and will address strategies for:

* recognizing high risk transactions and commercial practices;
* mitigating risks in high-risk settings;
* creating and maintaining credible compliance programs;
* deterring, preventing, and detecting misconduct;
* preparing for and conducting internal investigations of possible violations; and
* understanding U.S. legal standards applicable to U.S. companies operating in China and recent enforcement trends by US authorities.

Susan Munro is a counsel in the Shanghai office of O'Melveny & Myers LLP and is a barrister qualified in England, Wales and Hong Kong. Her practice includes cross-border civil litigation of complex frauds and investigative work in re the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and similar legislation in other common law jurisdictions. Daniel R. Fung, the first person of Chinese extraction to serve as Solicitor-General of Hong Kong, doing so in the years 1994 – 8 straddling its reversion to Chinese sovereignty, is Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Bar specializing in constitutional and commercial law, and an accredited China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission arbitrator. Mr Fung serves concurrently as Chairman of the Broadcasting Authority, the government regulator of television and radio broadcasting in and out of Hong Kong being Asia ’s media and communications hub. Mr Fung is also the founding Chairman of the East-West Strategic Development Commission (Estradev), a non-profit, apolitical platform for conducting business-to-government dialogue to stimulate economic growth in emerging markets.

A Fellow of University College London where he graduated LL.B. in 1974 and LL.M. in 1978 and a member of Middle Temple since 1974, the English Bar since 1975 and the Hong Kong Bar since 1977, Mr Fung was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1990. Mr Fung served from 1985-90 on the Basic Law Consultative Committee leading to the promulgation of Hong Kong ’s constitution, from 1992–4 as Deputy Judge of the High Court and from 1993-4 on the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong Government. Made the last British-appointed Solicitor-General of Hong Kong by Governor Chris Patten in 1994, Mr Fung went on to serve Chief Executive C H Tung in 1997 as the first Solicitor-General of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of People’s Republic of China. His portfolio covered Hong Kong’s legal, constitutional and human rights policy straddling its reversion to Chinese sovereignty, representing Hong Kong before the UN Human Rights Committee and the UN Committee on Economic, Social & Cultural Rights, representing Hong Kong on constitutional appeals to the Privy Council in London, overseeing law reform in Hong Kong as well as monitoring legal development in China.

At the luncheon, Mr. Fung will share with us his insights on the political and economic implications of the rise of China , and in particular, the role of Hong Kong in this context.

Come January 2007, 42 young talents from China Welfare Institute Children's Palace ( Shanghai) will stage a 2-night exclusive arts performance at Shunde Grand Theatre, right in the heart of the beautiful city of Daliang, Shunde, Foshan, Guangdong.

Founded by Madam Song Qing Lin in 1953, the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace is the first of such an organization in China that offers extra-curricular activities outside of school. Since its foundation, it has nurtured thousands of children in the performing arts and given them a happy and enriching childhood. Since 2002, these young talents have performed in more than 22 countries around the world. The China Welfare Institute has won many accolades for its efforts in promoting environmental, cultural and civic education among the young citizens of China.

The community will now the chance to enjoy the exclusive show "Youth in Praise of Spring" staged in the magnificently constructed, state-of-the-art Shunde Grand Theatre that can accommodate up to 1,375 persons per show.

Fundraising objectives

As the proud organizer of this cultural gala, Shunde Polytechnic's Hospitality &Tourism Department hopes to raise scholarship funds for our needy students through this event. Established a year ago, the new department seeks to nurture a new generation of service professionals for the fast growing and dynamic tourism & hospitality industry in China. The department is honored to have several distinguished individuals in our panel of honorary professors - Lu Ping, international movie star Jackie Chan, Dean Emeritus Chuck Gee, the acclaimed ' Yan-Can-Cook ' show host Chef Martin Yan, and Professor Zhang Hanqin ¨C to help the department attain this goal. Honorary Professor Lu Ping, President of the China Welfare Institute will grace this event as our Guest-of-Honor. Shunde's Vice Mayor Mr. Pan has given his strong endorsement for the event.
