Every three years the Foshan Government awards a Friendship Award to outstanding foreign experts who have contributed to the development of Foshan. For the first time, an educator and woman from the University of Hawaii, USA, Dr Roberta Wong Leung, Dean and Professor of Shunde Polytechnic, Department of Hotel, Tourism, and Cuisine Management was awarded the Foshan Government Friendship Award on December 13, 2007. December 12, 2007 - NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg Visits AmCham Shanghai - Visiting China en route to Bali for the UN Climate Change Conference, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg met with AmCham Shanghai members at an exclusive breakfast briefing on December 12. Mayor Bloomberg shared his experiences at Bloomberg LP and as Mayor of the Big Apple, contrasting running a business to running one of the world's major cities. He described his achievements in New York from reducing crime and improving the education system to furthering green initiatives. He also shared his perspective on U.S. foreign policy and energy strategies. I have the greatest job in the world,¡± he said, certainly the greatest job in government. Following his remarks, Chamber members shared their experiences as U.S. companies operating in China with the Mayor, discussing issues such as competitiveness, currency reform and the environment. Shanghai Customs & AmCham Liaison Program Luncheon - Yesterday Shanghai Customs Director General Sun Yibao and members of his staff attended a luncheon at the Hyatt on the Bund with AmCham President Brenda Foster and the AmCham Customs Task Force. The U.S. Consul General Kenneth Jarrett was also in attendance. The group reviewed the successful events that the liaison program had run during this past year including two open houses on consolidated clearance and and goods valuation and two events on customs regulation and bonded area services. Sun Yibao spoke about new programs Shanghai Customs has in store for 2008 and praised the success of the Liaison program.

National District Export Council Conference - November 7-9, 2007 Tampa, Florida

The Great Debate: The Future of U.S. Trade” was attended by more than 350 Exporters represented by District Export Councils (DEC) members and United States Commercial Officers throughout North America, Middle East and Asia - Charlotte Starfire of the Florida DEC is chairing the conference this year. October 27, 2007 - Chinese Actress Wei Minzhi (front row, 3rd from left) celebrate her 21st Birthday with friends at the Maple Garden Restaurant, Honolulu, Hawaii hosted by James Yan, Owner of the Newspaper "Hawaii Chinese News". The Story: In a remote mountain village, the teacher must leave for a month, and the mayor can find only a 13-year old girl (1999), Wei Minzhi, to substitute. The teacher leaves one stick of chalk for each day and promises her an extra 10 yuan if there's not one less student when he returns. Within days, poverty forces the class troublemaker, Zhang Huike, to leave for the city to work. Minzhi, possessed of a stubborn streak, determines to bring him back. She enlists the 26 remaining pupils in earning money for her trip. She hitches to Jiangjiakou City and begins her search. The boy, meanwhile, is there, lost and begging for food. Minzhi's stubbornness may be Huike and the village school's salvation (Director: Yimou Zhang, Writer: Xiangsheng Shi

將展出來自40個國家200部影片 - 夏威夷國際電影節開幕 (本報夏威夷訊)

第27屆夏威夷國際電影節於十月十八日(星期四)(開幕,將展出200部來自四十個不同國家的電影,展期預定到十月二十八日止。展出地點在Dole劇場,部分主要的影片則在夏威夷劇院放映,因夏威夷劇場有1500個座位。

今年開幕影片為侯孝賢導演的“紅色氣球”,已於十八日晚八時在夏威夷劇院公映。觀眾反響非常好,都表示此片值得一看。

其他華語影片將陸續分別在兩劇場推出,包括由趙本山主演的落葉歸根、圖雅的婚事、三峽好人、千年修度、內不拉斯公主、天堂口、盲、山靜婷、四大天王、練習曲、夜上海、基因決定我愛你、雞犬不寧等影片。放映地點和時間請瀏覽夏威夷國際電影節網頁 www.hiff.org,或電話550-8457票房查詢。也可親到Dole劇場680 Iwilei Road, Suite 100國際電影節辦公室索取影展目錄。Dole劇場門票為成人10元,軍人、學生和長者9元。夏威夷劇院票價成人15元,軍人、學生和長者為12元。

國際電影節主辦單位並於開幕記者會上宣布,華人著名演員陳沖 (Joan Chen) 獲得今屆影展的演技成就獎 (Achievement in Acting)。

陳沖將於十月二十一日(今日)晚上七時許親臨夏威夷劇院參加其所主演的影片“The Home song Stories”的公映,同時領取其演技成就獎。由於陳沖在李安導演的“色,戒”影片中有傑出的角色演出,加上該片目前正在夏威夷Ward和Dole劇場放映,許多影迷勢將擠滿夏威夷劇院。

夏威夷國際影展成立於一九八一年,起初為東西文化中心的一個部門,現擴大成為太平洋地區最大的國際影展機構,通過影片的展出,促進了亞洲太平洋和北美地區國家的文化交流和互相的了解。據悉,每年平均有七萬人參加該項影展的活動,非常盛況。

夏威夷國際影展今年另增設一“Hiff Cafe”,逢星期一至六下午三時至晚上九時,在dole劇院二樓設有CAFE餐廳,供觀眾於等候電影開始或放映後在該餐廳食用點心或在酒吧小飲和聊天。由於許多參展導演、演員及製片家都在該處聚集休息和交談,在該餐廳您也許可以見到您喜愛的演員或導演。

另外,每天下午四時並有討論會舉辦,討論有關影片製作和教育題材諸問題,值得參加,非常有教育性。希望有興趣的民眾不要錯失機會。

夏威夷大學中國研究中心孔子學院於九月十九日上午十一時半至下午二時,假座市中心PLAZA CLUB舉辦專題講座午餐會,邀請中國法律問題專家Randall Peepenboo博士,介紹其新近著作“中國現代化:是對西方的威脅或是其他地區的典範?”(Chinese Modernizes: Threat to the West or Model for the Rest?)此為夏大中國研究中心首次在校園外、市中心區舉辦專題演講會,給在市中心區工作的專業人士、企業家提供了方便。

該項講座係由夏威夷中華總商會 (Chinese Chamber of Commerce Honolulu)、香港中國夏威夷商會 (Hong Kong.China.Hawaii Chamber of Commerce HKCHcc)、太平洋和亞洲事務會 (Pacific Asian Affairs Council)、PAMI/CIBER SHIDLER COLLEGE OF BUSINESS等單位協辦。

當天上午十一時半,許多專業人士、律師、財務專家、企業家、學者教授及關心中國現代化的人士紛紛抵達,夏大孔子學院院長任友梅、朱梅萍教授、朱傳路教授、孫中山基金會陳燕等在PLAZA CLUB門前歡迎來賓,隨後共進BUFFER午餐敘談,增加與會者互相間的認識。

正午十二時半講座開始,首先由夏大中國研究中心主任張平華致歡迎詞,介紹夏大中國研究中心及其附屬的孔子學院,隨後也介紹了各協辦單位負責人及專題講座主講人Randall Peerenboom博士。

Randall Peerenboom博士獲有威斯康辛大學哲學系BA學位,夏威夷大學中國宗教MA學位及哲學系PH.D學位、哥倫比亞大學法學博士學位,為中國法律問題專家,目前居住於中國北京,為福特基金會及亞洲發展銀行的法律顧問。

Randall Peerenboom博士於演講中詳細就中國的經濟、政治和法律,尤其是民事政治、人權在發展國家的背景上做出分析。Peerenboom博士指出,許多亞洲發展中的國家只重視民主化,缺少建立財富,使民主化顯現困難重重。

Event sponsorships include cash, auction items and in-kind sponsorships help raise funds to train medical personnel and build much-needed healthcare facilities in cooperation with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation for sustained healthcare.

AmCham Shanghai held their Annual Charity Gala on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Pudong Shangri-la Hotel, Shanghai. This prestigious black tie event, attended by 500 members and friends, raised an estimated US$180,000 through sponsorships, silent auction, raffle and live-auction. The funds raised are for the Soong Ching Ling Foundation to train medical personnel and build much-needed healthcare facilities in the poor rural areas of Guizhou. The evening was extremely festive, filled with songs and dances performed by the AmCham staff and students of the International School. Mr. Kong Xiang Dong, descendant of Confucius and a renowned pianist, dazzled the audience with music from George Gershwin and the first movement from Yellow River Piano Concerto. Mr. Lu Ping, Chairman of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, talked about the close ties between China and USA. He thanked all the members of AmCham, especially AmCham’s President Ms. Brenda Foster for her relentless efforts in making contributions to the Foundation’s cause in maternity and child health care. Ms. Yen Chun, Director of Hong Kong.China.Hawaii Chamber of Commerce (HKHcc) and a trustee of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation also attended the event.

TIM Night/TIM School 40th Anniversary/Celebrate a Legacy Fundraising Gala at the Hawaii Convention Center - The University of Hawaii TIM School invites you to attend our Celebrate A Legacy Fundraiser Event. This year, instead of a single honoree, we will be celebrating the TIM Schools 40th Anniversary! This milestone event will be organized and produced by the students in lieu of “TIM Night”. This will be the only TIM fundraiser of the year, so they will need your support to make this evening a success. The night’s theme will take a Classic Black and White approach that is simple, elegant and timeless. The night will comprise of a celebration of the past as we look forward to the future. Artifacts and presentations will be on display illustrating the changes the school and the industry has gone through over the decades. Prestigious guests will speak on the history of the industry, and share their insights on future trends and developments. As always, there will be silent auction with a wide assortment of desirable items. Fine food and entertainment also awaits any attendee.

U.S. Senator Shelby Visits AmCham Shanghai - Senior Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) met with AmCham Shanghai members on August 8 in between visits to Tokyo and Beijing. The Senator, who has served as a legislator since 1986, is chairman of the Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs Committee and of the Commerce, Justice & Science Subcommittee. Shelby is well known internationally for his promotion of stricter regulations on foreign investment into the U.S. following the 2005 attempt by Dubai Ports World to take over management control of several U.S. ports. Shelby was in China at the kick-off to one month of travel through Asia and Europe. Shelby sought input from Chamber members on business challenges and opportunities in China.

Meeting with Prakash Khatri - Ombudsman and Ted Gong - Ombudsman/Executive Officer of Citizenship and Immigration Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security of Washington DC regarding the ongoing Approved Destination Status (ADS) discussions with the People Republic of China, the challenge that Group VISA currently not available or not granted by the U.S. Government and Biometric information at the time of VISA application. There are also various immigration issues and concerns such as people entering the United States for training has job guaranteed upon returning home. College graduates working in the field of studies using their 1 year practical training option has the opportunity to put in supervisory or management position i.e. international hotel chains in Hawaii not part of their Asia division expressed no interest to invest in the cost of training management employees for operations like China when more than 800 hotels are expected to be built in the next 3 - 5 years. Special VISA for wealthy retirees to live in Hawaii or anywhere in the USA without subject them to negative U.S. tax implication. How the State of Hawaii could work with other States to improve the chances to work out the final ADS Agreement?
