TIMI is an independent 501(c)(6) not-for-profit Organization - the purpose of the organization is to foster fellowship among its members for recreation, pleasure, and other non-profit objectives of a like nature, and for educational purposes except the carrying on a business, trade, a vocation or profession for profit

"Bring Back TIM Night - Pride of UH School of TIM" - Click Here to take the 1 minute survey  You are welcome to write more elaborate comments supporting TIM Alumni case and email it to jwkc8168@yahoo.com (mark "confidential" if you do not want to disclose your name) But just in case you are really busy, the 1 minute survey will at least give us some indication and a chance for you to express your opinion about TIM Night. In case you want to write, 50 - 60% of the current faculty may NOT know about the history of TIM School or TIM Night when they are hired to join UH TIM School. There may be some selling we have to do (i.e. like selling July 4th to someone in power to terminate Independent Day that know nothing about American history).

The Pride of UH TIM School through the generous contributions from 1,000s of UH TIM Alumni and Donors in Hawaii, Pacific Asian, North America and Europe for the establishment of the "Sunset Reference Library', the "Leong Hop & Bernice C. UH TIM Dean Emeritus Chuck Gee interviewed by Shanghai TV Station - 1st American University and Dean Invited by China Government to enter China in 1978

Aloha, Dave:

You did a lot of work to cobble together the viewpoints of alumni in drafting the Association's position paper on TIM Night. Congratulations on a job well done.

As the person who originated the event under founding dean Barnet, here is my 2 cents worth:

The value of TIM Night goes beyond its learning merit. It was until 2005 the only continuous activity to perpertuate the sense of a standing "tradition" in TIM since 1966 (when the first event--"TIM goes Inter-Continental" was created). Aside from its value as a "real world" exercise to compensate for not having quantity foods lab in the school in the early years, which is again the current situation, having a tradition in the model of the then top three HRTM schools on the mainland, namely--Cornell Hotel School (Ezra Cornell Day), MSU`s HRI School (Le Gourmet Night) and the University of Denver's H&R School (Pioneer Day)--was part of the reason TIM Night was created at the outset. The newly established TIM School of 1967/68 was not known to the profession and could not compete in reputation to schools which had at least a half century head start. It was common knowledge within the industry that these once-a-year events helped promote the mainland programs to their constituencies--not only the lodging and hospitality companies, but also the parents of students enrolled in HRTM majors. Indeed, industry often had their first exposure to students through these banquet projects. One reason given by local industry in supporting TIM Night was to recruit talented students who assumed leadership positions in the project.

As you noted, there has been a great deal of change in TIM Night over the years. The event took on different dimensions to dilute its original purpose and ideals. Too much of the activities that are true learning value got farmed out, while TIM students focused on the "show business" end of the event--something they were ill-equipped to do without proper professional assistance and oversight. The last few events--I've shared my observations with Dean Jamieson about this--were far less in quality than earlier events under John Cox and the students' industry mentors. Strangely, the best TIM Nights were produced during the days when no academic credits were given--only the waiver of an internship requirement (and this was done much later). When TIM Night got co-opted to replace the loss of Business Night--our once conjoint activity with CBA--it further changed the original intent and objectives of TIM Night.

In summary, I endorse the alumni's position, but with this caveat: The students have to really want and be willing to work it, the faculty and administration must back them, and the alumni and industry need to assist. Absent support from any of these constitutencies, TIM Night cannot prevail nor recapture its earlier glory.

December 31 2007 A Day with Ted Sakai, General Manager of the Double Tree Hotel Sonoma Wine Country

We spend a day with Mr. Ted Sakai, General Manager of Double Tree Hotel Sonoma Wine Country. Ted was 1999 University of Hawaii, School of Travel Industry Management (TIM School) Distinguished Hall of Honor Alumni. 1999 was a memorable year. Ted Sakai and Johnson Choi were inducted into TIM School Hall of Honor in the same year, sharing the honor is our good friend and now president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, Mrs. Brenda Foster who was inducted in the UH College of Business Hall of Honor in the same evening. Mrs. Foster is also the founding members and vice president of the Hong Kong.China.Hawaii Chamber of Commerce. There are a number of UH TIM Alumni in California such as Rita Lau, General Manager of The Fairmont San Francisco and Randi Fernandez, F&B Manager of the Four Seasons Hotel at Newport Beach. When Ted was the President of the T.I.M. International Inc (the alumni association of the UH School of TIM), TIMI held the graduation exercise at the Hilton Hawaiian Village - a much preferred venue by most TIM graduates. The TIM Night that was the heart of soul of the TIM School that used to hold our alumni together was terminated by the new administration and missed by our alumni worldwide. The ability of Dean Emeritus Chuck Gee to hold the UH TIM Alumni worldwide together when he travel the world.  Elena Tom, the "mom" of UH TIM School, Professor Cox (Washington State) and Professor Fox (Las Vegas) brought back fond memories. I have shared with Ted we need to bring back the Ohana spirit of the TIM School and find way to re-connect with our alumni worldwide - bring back TIM Night could be one of the key.

Honorees' Family Reception Before Dinner Silent Auction Items

Dr. Edward M Barnet - First Dean of the University of Hawaii, School of Travel Industry Management, served as the Dean of the School from 1964 - 1974

Dean Barnet proudly retired from the School with this letter to all:

The future of the TIM School will be assured by you - the students and alumni of TIM. Your successes-of whatever kind-will make its fame. Your achievements will be its triumph. Naturally, I will always want to be aware and will remain vitally concerned with all that you do.

It has been a great privilege to be in on the launching of the School of Travel Industry Management. It contains a concept and a philosophy of learning that others are starting to copy.

But, I must call to you attention the untiring efforts of the work of graduate students, faculty, staff and the serious support of legislative and industry leaders. All  of these have made your experience in TIM a reality.

Most of all, I do not need to state but must express my appreciation for the endless assistance and inspiration given to you by Associate Dean Chuck Y. Gee. Without his work, days, nights and weekends, you know what might not have been: TIM Nights, Scholarships, trips. He has taught you the joy of giving services as was so vividly expressed at my testimonial dinner which you prepared to perfection.

As I step into another phase of my life, I can only be thankful for the rare privilege of being a part of a meaningful effort, for the opportunity to assist you and the many others who will build careers of greater significance to yourselves and to others. (Farewell letter, published in Ka'ahele, 1974).

February 27, 2007 - Note from Mona Chock, Former UHAA Director

Hi, Johnson:

Thanks for the notice about Anna Woo's memorial service. Sir Manny Woo helped the UHAA-Hong Kong in the early 1990's when Roberta Wong Leung was organizing the alumni with UHAA-HK president Kenneth Lo. Manny Woo was the head of the HK Tourism Bureau and allowed the UHAA to use that office for its mail, email, and for rsvps for UHAA event gatherings. Because Sir Manny Woo had been knighted by the Queen, his public support for UHAA and UH provided the organizations with credibility and distinction.

Aloha,
Mona K. O. Chock

TIM Night/TIM School 40th Anniversary/Celebrate a Legacy Fundraising Gala at the Hawaii Convention Center - The University of Hawaii TIM School invites you to attend our Celebrate A Legacy Fundraiser Event. This year, instead of a single honoree, we will be celebrating the TIM Schools 40th Anniversary! This milestone event will be organized and produced by the students in lieu of “TIM Night”. This will be the only TIM fundraiser of the year, so they will need your support to make this evening a success. The night’s theme will take a Classic Black and White approach that is simple, elegant and timeless. The night will comprise of a celebration of the past as we look forward to the future. Artifacts and presentations will be on display illustrating the changes the school and the industry has gone through over the decades. Prestigious guests will speak on the history of the industry, and share their insights on future trends and developments. As always, there will be silent auction with a wide assortment of desirable items. Fine food and entertainment also awaits any attendee.  Please support the TIM School by attending this fundraiser event. It promises to be an evening of celebration that will be remembered for years to come. June 21, 2003

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents yesterday named Walter Jamieson as the new dean of the University of Hawai'i's School of Travel Industry Management, filling a vacancy left by the retirement of Chuck Gee in 1999.

The regents approved a three-year appointment and a $145,000 annual salary for Jamieson. He starts Aug. 1 2003.

Jamieson is vice chairman of the World Tourism Education and Research Centre at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. He is also professor of planning and director of an intern program within the Faculty of Environmental Design at the university.

Jamieson was recommended to the regents by UH-Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert based on a search led by Lawrence Foster, outgoing dean of UH's William S. Richardson School of Law. Jamieson beat out two other finalists, James F. Burke, dean of The Collins School of Hospitality Management at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona; and Stephen L.J. Smith, professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. There were about 50 applicants for the position.

Some 350 students attend travel industry management classes taught by about 13 faculty members. About two-thirds of students are Hawai'i residents and one-quarter are international students, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region. The school has an international reputation for producing well-trained graduates.

"One of the big strengths Jamieson brings to it is he has some very good Asia-Pacific experience," Foster said.

Pauline Sheldon, interim dean of the TIM School, said Jamieson has been well-published, supportive of research and successful in finding money for projects, "so we're hoping that those skills will translate into fund-raising for the school."

Jamieson holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in environmental studies from York University in Toronto, a master's degree in environmental conservation from the Edinburgh College of Art/Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a doctorate in urban and regional studies from the University of Birmingham in England.

Gee served as dean of the TIM School from 1976 to 1999. The search for a dean to succeed him was stalled while the university considered a plan to merge the school with the College of Business Administration. The idea was quashed after Evan Dobelle became president.

The Gallery was initiated in 1993 under the then Chairman of PATA, Pierre Dohley, as a way to recognize the pioneers and visionaries who played important roles in developing and promoting tourism to, from and within the Asia Pacific region and beyond. The concept was to name an individual, usually someone from the past, whose accomplishments are "legendary" and would, when possible, tie in with the theme of the annual PATA conference.  Since 1993, the following individuals have been inducted in the Gallery:

"Search firm president sees 'more qualified women today" Kathryn Inkinen,  President, Inkinen & Associates....I would love to get to the point where I can see our economy rebounding and we can bring home more Hawai'i residents through a career opportunity. Now they are coming home from a personal perspective. They are coming home because their parents are elderly or they want their son or daughter to enter Punahou or Iolani, or they are burnt out with the lifestyle of their job or Mainland living. Very few come because of a career opportunity.
